  3. http://news.ca.msn.com/top-stories/end-destructive-war-on-pot-panel-urges-harper The Global Commission on Drug Policy says it's "very weird" that Canada is taking a tougher line on marijuana when governments across the globe are reconsidering the war on drugs. In an open letter Wednesday to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Brazil-based commission calls on Canada to stop pursuing the "destructive, expensive and ineffective" prohibition of pot. Louise Arbour, a former Supreme Court of Canada judge, former Brazilian president Fernando Cardoso, former Swiss president Ruth Dreifuss and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson are among the signatories to the letter that warns Canada is repeating "the same grave mistakes as other countries." "Building more prisons, tried for decades in the United States under its failed war on drugs, only deepens the drug problem and does not reduce cannabis supply or rates of use," says the letter. "Instead, North American youth now report easier access to cannabis than to alcohol or tobacco." Top news The commission includes an ideological cross-section of world leaders, among them George Shultz, former U.S. secretary of state in the Reagan Republican presidency, former Mexican president Ernesto Zedillo and Paul Volker, the former head of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Their reservations are not theoretical, but are aimed directly at the Conservative government's omnibus crime bill currently nearing passage in the Senate. The letter states that "with the proposed implementation of mandatory prison sentences for minor cannabis-related offences under Bill C-10, Canada is at the threshold of continuing to repeat the same grave mistakes as other countries, moving further down a path that has proven immensely destructive and ineffective at meeting its objectives." Ilona Szabo, a spokeswoman for the commission secretariat, said in an interview that Canada is confounding an international community that considers the country a beacon of evidence-based policy. "It's a very weird message for Canada because they would be ... discharging the evidence on the scene and they would be adopting policies that are outdated and that are actually much more harmful than the issues in question," Szabo told The Canadian Press in an interview from Rio de Janiero, Brazil. She noted governments across the hemisphere are finally starting to reconsider their approach to drugs, just as Canada moves in the opposite direction. Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, through his office, declined to be interviewed on arguments made by the commission. "The Safe Streets and Communities Act goes after the source of the illicit drug trade — the drug traffickers," spokeswoman Julie DiMambro said in an emailed response. "The kinds of offenders we are targeting are those who are involved in exploiting the addictions of others for personal profit." The email noted that the legislation includes "drug treatment courts so that those who are unfortunately addicted can get the help that they need." But the commission argues that first-hand experience globally has shown that violent, illegal markets are the "inevitable" result of pot prohibition and can't be fixed with tougher laws. "This has been the experience internationally," said the letter. "In fact, among the things that are driving organized crime and violence in British Columbia and other Canadian provinces is, although on a lesser scale, just what is driving the violence in Mexico — demand for drugs in the United States. Tougher drug laws in Canada will not address this root cause." And the letter-writers appeal to Canadians' sense of international pride to make their case. "Canada has a proud international tradition of innovative and realistic policies; tougher drug law enforcement tactics such as mandatory minimum sentencing for minor drug law offences will put a huge strain on Canadian taxpayers, will not have the intended effect of creating safer communities, and will instead further entrench the marijuana industry in the hands of organized crime groups." In a press release accompanying the release of the letter, Brazil's former president called for "fundamental reforms in national and global drug control policies." "We should start by treating cannabis use as a health issue and undermine organized crime by legally regulating the drug's use rather than promoting prohibition policies which actually fuel gang violence, Cardoso said in the release.

  8. http://www.mernagh.ca/ontario-court-of-appeal-dates-chosen-r-v-mernagh/ Ontario Court of Appeal court dates have been chosen for R v. Mernagh. The court ruling gutting Canada’s federal medical marijuana program, personal possession and cultivation laws is set to be heard March 5 and 6, 2012. A small team of talented lawyers will descend on Osgoode Hall for two days to argue before three judges. Earlier this summer federal prosecutors won a reprieve on a 90 day marijuana legalization deadline. In exchange for a legal time – prosecutors were ordered to have their case ready by mid-November. Team Mernagh was given an option to chose the dates. These are their best dates. Sunday 900 - 1030 est Mernagh Legal Marijuana Grow Room Paul Lewin will represent Matthew Mernagh. Several interveners have called expressing interest in becoming positively involved. These community driven agencies will be sending lawyers who will seek to address the court as third parties. Given the scope of R v. Mernagh having more than one lawyer working the appeal judges is important. Should medicinal marijuana patient Matt Mernagh be allowed to grow his own cannabis without a Health Canada license? Mernagh argues he is unable to get his doctor to sign a Health Canada med pot application – allowing him to grow his own. Ontario Superior court judge D.J. Taliano concluded less than one half of a one percent of Canadian doctors have signed applications. Prosecutors argue the problem is not with the federal program, but with doctor’s. Mernagh retorts federal government has tasked doctors as gatekeepers to a program they have had no input on. Canadian Medical Association has written Health Canada expressing concerns that have gone un-answered. Justice Taliano ruled medicinal marijuana is not treatment of last resort. Canadians should not have to try a slew of pharmaceutical medications before choosing plant therapy. To cope with doctor unwillingness he suggests alternative therapy practitioners be allowed to sign Health Canada’s application. With no federal legal medical marijuana program accessible to sick Canadians, he determined Canada’s marijuana laws for personal cultivation and possession un-constitutional. Mernagh’s marijuana grow charge was squashed. He was granted an exemption from federal marijuana laws. Allowing him to grow marijuana legally. Mernagh webcasts live from his legal marijuana grow room on Sunday nights at 9 pm est via Livestream. The show and previous shows are available on demand as a rerun.

  11. http://hammeroftruth.com/2011/natures-cure-for-cancer-finally-discovered-by-scientists-thc/ Nature’s cure for cancer finally discovered by scientists: THC A new paper released by a joint study between the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, the Medical College of Virginia Campus and the Virginia Commonwealth University has confirmed that the THC in cannabis is without a doubt stimulating healthy cells within the body to seek out and fuck up cancerous ones. The title of the research paper is indeed a mouthful: Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-Induced Apoptosis in Jurkat Leukemia T Cells Is Regulated by Translocation of Bad to Mitochondria. Apparently they get paid to be good scientists at universities, but are terrible at communicating this stuff very well to broad audiences. Hidden within the nearly incomprehensible language of the finding is this image which helps dumbshits like me laymen grasp the results without having to look up the definition of every third word. U0126 is a selective inhibitor that seems to benefit greatly from being paired with THC to tag team the cancer cells. The key probably requires a PhD behind your name to fully understand, but the results were reproduced by three independent experiments. I’m not so sure what a Jurkat cell is all about, but killing them is apparently a good idea and THC is very good at it. Good luck understanding this: Effects of THC on mitochondrial localization of Bad in THC-stimulated cells. A. Jurkat cells were treated with either 15 μmol/L LY294002 (LY) or 2 μmol/L H-89 in medium containing 10% FBS in the absence or presence of 10 μmol/L THC for a total 12 hours, after which the percentage of apoptotic cells were determined as described in Fig. 1A. Columns, mean of three separate experiments done in triplicate; bars, SD. *, P < 0.05, significantly less than values obtained for the treated cells with THC + LY294002. B. Cells were cultured with either 15 μmol/L LY294002 or 25 μmol/L U0126 in medium containing 10% FBS in the absence or presence of 10 μmol/L THC for a total 12 hours, after which Western analysis was used to monitor expression of phospho-Akt (Thr308), phospho-Akt (Ser473), and Akt. Akt served as a loading control. C. Cells were cultured as described in B, after which precleared cell lysates were incubated overnight with mouse monoclonal anti-Bad IgG conjugated to protein A-agarose beads. Immunoprecipitates were subsequently subjected to Western analysis to monitor the phosphorylation status of phospho-Bad (Ser112), phospho-Bad (Ser136), and phospho-Bad (Ser155). All sites were analyzed on a single blot. Cos cells were used as a positive control. Representative experiment. Two additional studies yielded equivalent results. D. Quantitative changes in Bad phosphorylation were determined by densitometric analysis of immunoblots. Columns, mean of three independent experiments done in triplicate; bars, SD. E. Jurkat cells treated as described in B, after which cells were adhered to slides by cytospin and subjected to double staining with anti-Bad antibodies and Cy2-labeled secondary antibodies (green) followed by a mitochondrion-specific dye (MitoTracker Deep Red 633) and then analyzed by confocal microscopy. Similar results were obtained in three independent experiments. Apoptosis is the programmed death of cancer cells, which was highly increased under twelve-hour THC conditions in the test. So there you have it “plant-derived cannabinoids, including Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), induce apoptosis in leukemic cells, although the precise mechanism remains unclear.” Scientists have conclusively discovered a truth: Marijuana literally kills cancer cells.
