faltam alguns ajustes ainda.

1

00:00:22,085 --> 00:00:24,987

People are lighting up

All over the country

2

00:00:26,273 --> 00:00:28,828

They call it the Green Rush

3

00:00:29,733 --> 00:00:32,952

Marijuana has moved out of the back alleys

and into the open

4

00:00:33,392 --> 00:00:34,516

Happy cannabis crop, you all.

5

00:00:34,740 --> 00:00:38,532

In some states it's legal to grow

to sell, to smoke

6

00:00:39,011 --> 00:00:42,026

and marijuana could be legalized

in a city near you

7

00:00:42,827 --> 00:00:46,308

So easy to get

and many think so harmless

8

00:00:47,176 --> 00:00:50,296

But when the smoke clears,

is marijuana bad for you

9

00:00:50,725 --> 00:00:53,524

or could pot actually be good for you?

10

00:00:53,862 --> 00:00:57,445

- Marijuana is better than all those pills for you in terms of treating?

- Yeah

11

00:00:57,835 --> 00:00:59,947

I traveled the world for answers

12

00:01:00,240 --> 00:01:03,601

What does marijuana do to you?

What does it do to your kids?

13

00:01:04,136 --> 00:01:07,045

A special investigation

WEED

14

00:01:12,880 --> 00:01:13,971

Our journey begins here

15

00:01:14,520 --> 00:01:17,162

in this small town home

nestled in the mountains

16

00:01:17,566 --> 00:01:20,843

with a family who has never

allowed TV cameras in before

17

00:01:21,667 --> 00:01:23,093

and you're going to soon learn why

18

00:01:23,399 --> 00:01:25,092

- This is so pretty out here

- Yeah

19

00:01:25,670 --> 00:01:27,017

They live in Colorado

20

00:01:27,315 --> 00:01:31,580

one of two states where it's legal to smoke pot

medically and recreationally

21

00:01:32,550 --> 00:01:37,150

but here it's also taboo to residents like Paige Figi

and her husband Matt

22

00:01:37,649 --> 00:01:40,685

- I'm sure it was mentioned to us by someone

Hey, you should try this

23

00:01:40,920 --> 00:01:43,357

- And I thought no way

- You thought that's fringe stuff?

24

00:01:43,621 --> 00:01:45,315

No way. Not in a million years. No.

25

00:01:45,860 --> 00:01:49,142

But in this area marijuana is far from fringe

26

00:01:49,646 --> 00:01:51,712

More joints?

And do you want island sweet?

27

00:01:52,016 --> 00:01:54,723

- Medical dispensaries are everywhere

- Welcome, guys

28

00:01:55,082 --> 00:01:58,947

People are smoking in private clubs

and public festivals

29

00:01:59,589 --> 00:02:02,345

But none of this is for Matt

He is a military man

30

00:02:02,983 --> 00:02:05,135

and marijuana would be a career ender

31

00:02:05,432 --> 00:02:08,866

I grew up in Wisconsin

in a well-loving family, and I was educated, like,

32

00:02:09,144 --> 00:02:12,164

that's a drug. You don't do that!

And I never did

33

00:02:12,596 --> 00:02:15,697

But just decades ago marijuana was a legitimate medication

34

00:02:16,184 --> 00:02:20,578

also called cannabis. prescribed by doctors

and dispensed by pharmacies

35

00:02:21,138 --> 00:02:25,406

But that all changed in 1930

36

00:02:27,408 --> 00:02:31,359

Henry Anslinger, the United States first drug czar

37

00:02:31,645 --> 00:02:33,911

For him public enemy number one

38

00:02:34,260 --> 00:02:36,914

you guessed it, marijuana.

39

00:02:37,449 --> 00:02:42,324

This guy saw how he could increase the budget

of his department

40

00:02:42,622 --> 00:02:45,999

by having this mission.

Going after marijuana.

41

00:02:46,553 --> 00:02:50,098

You know, saying that there's this drug

that the Mexican migrant workers are smoking

42

00:02:50,367 --> 00:02:53,930

and it's loco weed, and it's going make them crazy,

and they're going to rape your women.

43

00:02:54,336 --> 00:02:57,789

He got the anti-marijuana message out

through news reports

44

00:02:58,273 --> 00:03:01,000

and then came this

45

00:03:03,735 --> 00:03:05,977

The film "Reefer Madness"

46

00:03:06,381 --> 00:03:10,245

portraying the users of marijuana

as unproductive, crazed.

47

00:03:10,567 --> 00:03:13,569

People are still afraid of what pot can do to them.

48

00:03:13,915 --> 00:03:18,106

- In many ways to have defined our attitudes now for 70 years!

-Yes

49

00:03:18,639 --> 00:03:21,908

Marijuana then became illegal in 1937

50

00:03:22,219 --> 00:03:26,658

And by 1970 it was a schedule

one controlled substance

51

00:03:27,096 --> 00:03:28,283

The government was saying

52

00:03:28,598 --> 00:03:32,075

It had no medicinal value

and had a high potential for abuse

53

00:03:33,368 --> 00:03:36,091

All reasons why the Figis stayed away from marijuana

54

00:03:36,910 --> 00:03:39,092

Until this

55

00:03:39,485 --> 00:03:42,300

And this might be hard for some of you to watch

56

00:03:44,516 --> 00:03:50,414

- It's OK, baby

57

00:03:52,292 --> 00:03:55,796

This is their daughter, Charlotte

58

00:03:56,388 --> 00:03:57,404

having a seizure.

59

00:03:58,452 --> 00:04:01,144

We just thought it was just one random fibril seizure

60

00:04:01,708 --> 00:04:05,271

- Nothing to really do. No medications.

It's a fluke? Right

61

00:04:05,618 --> 00:04:09,777

A fluke made sense.

After all, Charlotte, nicknamed Charlie

62

00:04:10,009 --> 00:04:13,750

was born perfectly healthy.

A fraternal twin to sister Chase

63

00:04:15,719 --> 00:04:19,343

Charlie always had big, big smiles.

Just happy kids

64

00:04:19,816 --> 00:04:21,802

- Easy

- Yes, easy. Very much so

65

00:04:22,844 --> 00:04:23,930

So it was around three months

66

00:04:24,240 --> 00:04:27,552

you said that when you first noticed

that Charlie had a seizure.

67

00:04:27,832 --> 00:04:30,311

I was changing her diaper.

While putting a new diaper on from after the bath

68

00:04:30,794 --> 00:04:32,979

and her eyes just started flickering.

69

00:04:33,310 --> 00:04:35,611

It led to the first of many trips to the E.R.

70

00:04:36,332 --> 00:04:40,987

They did the million-dollar workup, MRI, EEG,

spinal tap, you know, they did the whole workup

71

00:04:41,461 --> 00:04:43,411

and found nothing and sent us home.

72

00:04:43,964 --> 00:04:46,479

No abnormal blood test?

No abnormal scan?

73

00:04:46,802 --> 00:04:49,758

and developing normally, too.

You know, talking and walking

74

00:04:50,104 --> 00:04:52,994

and the same day as her twin.

Nothing was behind yet.

75

00:04:54,844 --> 00:04:58,219

By the time she was 2, though

the seizures had become constant

76

00:04:58,576 --> 00:05:01,610

and started to take their toll

on their once happy

77

00:05:02,179 --> 00:05:05,926

- Joyful little girl

- She started to really decline cognitively

78

00:05:06,237 --> 00:05:09,242

and she was slipping away.

And she just wasn't keeping up with her twin.

79

00:05:09,616 --> 00:05:11,277

The Figis finally found an answer

80

00:05:12,025 --> 00:05:15,158

It was awful news.

Dravet Syndrome.

81

00:05:15,841 --> 00:05:17,875

It is severe intractable epilepsy

82

00:05:18,297 --> 00:05:21,939

The seizures start during the first year of life

and are unstoppable

83

00:05:22,552 --> 00:05:24,924

Difficult to control and very damaging

84

00:05:25,553 --> 00:05:29,818

Severe behavioral problems, attention deficit,

hyperactivity the self-injury

85

00:05:30,135 --> 00:05:31,839

you know, banging her head on the floor

86

00:05:32,106 --> 00:05:34,916

and pulling her hair out

and like a possessed child

87

00:05:35,467 --> 00:05:37,648

This isn't your perfect, happy Charlotte.

88

00:05:38,111 --> 00:05:42,697

It was a race against time. Many Dravet kids

die young in early childhood

89

00:05:43,284 --> 00:05:48,380

Charlotte was almost 3. For the next

two years the Figis tried everything

90

00:05:48,805 --> 00:05:51,163

Strange diets, acupuncture

91

00:05:52,355 --> 00:05:55,952

and dozens of powerful drugs like valium,

Ativan, even barbital

92

00:05:56,376 --> 00:05:59,246

But nothing seemed to help.

Even worse

93

00:05:59,550 --> 00:06:02,493

some of the medications nearly killed her.

94

00:06:02,864 --> 00:06:07,011

After one dose she stops breathing and

after two doses her heart will stop.

95

00:06:07,316 --> 00:06:09,692

- Did you have to do CPR then on her yourself?

- Yes

96

00:06:10,069 --> 00:06:12,155

I remember when her heart stopped,

and I had her pulse

97

00:06:12,491 --> 00:06:15,688

and I lost her pulse. There was just nothing.

The ambulance is on its way.

98

00:06:16,778 --> 00:06:18,028

She survived.

99

00:06:19,645 --> 00:06:22,126

- Mommy?

- You're OK. Mommy is here.

100

00:06:22,406 --> 00:06:26,303

But now it was fall of 2011

and Charlotte was 5 years old

101

00:06:26,773 --> 00:06:28,056

When things are at their worst she just

102

00:06:28,332 --> 00:06:33,214

the kids are sleeping either in my room or next.

So they can hear her seizure scream all night

103

00:06:33,527 --> 00:06:36,530

50 times a night, and Chase would

come in, in the morning

104

00:06:36,812 --> 00:06:41,878

and just misses her twin and just hug her and

like, rub her head and say

105

00:06:42,611 --> 00:06:46,205

I'm just so glad you survived through

the night last night.

106

00:06:47,648 --> 00:06:49,974

Matt had been deployed to Afghanistan

107

00:06:50,381 --> 00:06:54,008

and the only thing he could do to help

was start scouring the Internet.

108

00:06:55,446 --> 00:06:59,142

And he stumbled on to this video

of a child using marijuana

109

00:06:59,934 --> 00:07:03,795

- So how is everything going?

- He had four days without a seizure

110

00:07:04,154 --> 00:07:08,768

Wow! They're having success on specifically

Dravet. This is interesting. It's natural.

111

00:07:09,316 --> 00:07:12,554

And while he couldn't ever imagine

taking marijuana himself

112

00:07:12,912 --> 00:07:16,950

he was now in the stunning position

of recommending it for Charlotte.

113

00:07:17,465 --> 00:07:19,950

- I was, like, we need to do this.

- And I said I don't know.

114

00:07:20,758 --> 00:07:23,136

- There you are

115

00:07:23,577 --> 00:07:26,270

And then Charlotte's condition got worse

116

00:07:27,340 --> 00:07:30,351

Three hundred seizures a week.

Almost two every hour

117

00:07:30,893 --> 00:07:34,273

She was not talking or moving,

Basically catatonic

118

00:07:35,558 --> 00:07:38,520

As a last resort doctors wanted to either prescribe

119

00:07:38,871 --> 00:07:41,041

a powerful veterinary drugs

used on epileptic dogs

120

00:07:41,732 --> 00:07:46,154

or put Charlotte in a medically induced coma.

So her brain and body could rest

121

00:07:46,732 --> 00:07:49,892

For Paige those were not good options

122

00:07:50,329 --> 00:07:54,300

but maybe, just maybe marijuana now was

123

00:07:55,568 --> 00:07:58,365

But she was about to find out

how hard that would be.

124

00:07:58,740 --> 00:08:01,277

This isn't go to the pharmacy

and pick up your medicine

125

00:08:01,539 --> 00:08:02,836

There was no protocol.

126

00:08:03,354 --> 00:08:05,493

When we come back, what will the Figis do?

127

00:08:05,811 --> 00:08:09,123

And What would you do if this were your daughter?

DR. CHRISTIAN THURSTONE, ADDICTION EXPERT: There is no longer any scientific debate that marijuana is not just psychologically addictive, but also physically addictive.
So give me an update. How are you doing?
Me atualize (me diga) Como vc está indo?
GUPTA: Dr. Christian Thurstone runs one of Colorado's largest youth substance abuse treatment clinics. The number of marijuana addicts he treats has tripled in the last three years alone.
THURSTONE: Literally I cried about it. Marijuana is number one on their list of priorities. They have dropped out of life.
VARGAS: Back in the day I would have feel like my day has really started if I didn't high.
GUPTA: Joel Vargas started smoking when he was just 13. By 15 he was smoking more than a dozen times a day. He stopped skateboarding. He even dropped out of school.
VARGAS: I like getting high. I need to get high because my brain is telling me.
THURSTONE: Adolescence, starting at about age 13 have a pretty mature brain reward center, so they can experience rewards and pleasures the same way adults can, but the problem with that is that their prefrontal cortex, which helps people think ahead, control their impulses, that's not fully developed until age 24. That explains why adolescents are much more vulnerable.
GUPTA: There's something else that addiction experts believe is likely happening in the brain. When you smoke pot, the feel-good chemicals that make up marijuana called cannibinoids, remember them? They cause your brain to stop producing its own natural cannibinoids. When you stop smoking, you have no feel good cannibinoids of your own. Until your body kick starts production, you feel lousy, so many people smoke again to feel better.
And today's marijuana could be more addictive. It has more of the psychoactive ingredient, THC, than ever before. Brain researcher Dr. Nora Volcow.
Pesquisadora do cérebro Dr. Nora Volcow.
DR. NORA VOLCOW, BRAIN RESEARCHER: If you smoke a very potent marijuana, the 9 THC content is going to go very fact into your brain at a relatively high concentrations and then that increases its rewarding effects and likely transition into addiction.
GUPTA: So how much stronger is it?
Bem! O quanto forte é isso?
You see the barbed wire, obviously, on the fences.
Você vê o arame farpado, evidentemente, sobre as cercas
Well, I traveled to Mississippi where marijuana is illegal, but here on the campus of one of the country's oldest universities, Ole Miss, a huge stash of marijuana is under lock
and key.
MAHMOUD ELSOHLY, MARIJUANA POTENCY PROJECT: This is our vault.
Este é o nosso cofre.
GUPTA: This is some pretty tight security. I mean, look at this door
.
Esta é uma execelente segurança. Quero dizer, olhe para esta porta.
Mahmoud ElSohly runs what's called a Marijuana Potency Project.
What's the potency of this?
Qual é a potência desse?
ELSOHLY: This is about 8 percent.
É em torno de 8%
GUPTA: For three decades now his team has analyzed weed confiscated from drug busts.
ELSOHLY: This is 36 percent THC. You can smell it. It has a good aromatic smell.
Esta tem 36 % de THC. Voce pode sentir o cheiro dela. Éla tem uma boa fragância
GUPTA: How much is this worry you, 36 percent THC confiscated?
O quanto esses 36% de THC confiscados preocupam vcs?
ELSOHLY: Very, very dangerous material. For someone that is not experienced in marijuana smoking takes some of this, and they're going to go into the negative effects of the high, the amount of THC, the psychosis, the irritation, irritability, the paranoia, and all of this.
GUPTA: And while not all the plants are this high, there's no question he's seen a trend. In 1972 the average potency was less than 1 percent THC. Now it's nearly 13 percent.
Are people becoming more obsessed with high THC marijuana? ELSOHLY: I think so. They're starting out with a half a percent and 1 percent, and they get a good high, and then as they continue to use that, it doesn't give them the same high anymore, so they see -- you know, smoking more or high potency material.
GUPTA: It happened to Joel Vargas. After a couple of years of smoking daily, Joel eventually ended up in rehab where he faced mild withdrawal symptoms like irritability, insomnia, nausea.
HOLLAND: It certainly isn't anything nearly as dangerous as abrupt discontinuation of alcohol. You know, for somebody like Joel, going into rehab is really about learning new behaviors more than it is about sort of treating the physiological dependence or tolerance or withdrawal issues.
GUPTA: Joel has been clean now for six months, but these kinds of risks, they don't scare off Charlotte Figi's parents.
M. FIGI: People ask us that a lot. Like, you know, how did you make that decision? It wasn't a decision.
P. FIGI: It wasn't a decision.
Não era uma decisão.
M. FIGI: It was the next viable option.
Foi a próxima opção viável
GUPTA: And some would say a radical option. Marijuana for a 5-year- old, but it was an option they hoped would change her life forever.
When we come back, Matt and Paige Figi finally give their Charlotte marijuana. The results are shocking.

1

00:00:22,085 --> 00:00:24,987

People are lighting up

All over the country

2

00:00:26,273 --> 00:00:28,828

They call it the Green Rush

3

00:00:29,733 --> 00:00:32,952

Marijuana has moved out of the back alleys

and into the open

4

00:00:33,392 --> 00:00:34,516

Happy cannabis crop, you all.

5

00:00:34,740 --> 00:00:38,532

In some states it's legal to grow

to sell, to smoke

6

00:00:39,011 --> 00:00:42,026

and marijuana could be legalized

in a city near you

7

00:00:42,827 --> 00:00:46,308

So easy to get

and many think so harmless

8

00:00:47,176 --> 00:00:50,296

But when the smoke clears,

is marijuana bad for you

9

00:00:50,725 --> 00:00:53,524

or could pot actually be good for you?

10

00:00:53,862 --> 00:00:57,445

- Marijuana is better than all those pills for you in terms of treating?

- Yeah

11

00:00:57,835 --> 00:00:59,947

I traveled the world for answers

12

00:01:00,240 --> 00:01:03,601

What does marijuana do to you?

What does it do to your kids?

13

00:01:04,136 --> 00:01:07,045

A special investigation

WEED

14

00:01:12,880 --> 00:01:13,971

Our journey begins here

15

00:01:14,520 --> 00:01:17,162

in this small town home

nestled in the mountains

16

00:01:17,566 --> 00:01:20,843

with a family who has never

allowed TV cameras in before

17

00:01:21,667 --> 00:01:23,093

and you're going to soon learn why

18

00:01:23,399 --> 00:01:25,092

- This is so pretty out here

- Yeah

19

00:01:25,670 --> 00:01:27,017

They live in Colorado

20

00:01:27,315 --> 00:01:31,580

one of two states where it's legal to smoke pot

medically and recreationally

21

00:01:32,550 --> 00:01:37,150

but here it's also taboo to residents like Paige Figi

and her husband Matt

22

00:01:37,649 --> 00:01:40,685

- I'm sure it was mentioned to us by someone

Hey, you should try this

23

00:01:40,920 --> 00:01:43,357

- And I thought no way

- You thought that's fringe stuff?

24

00:01:43,621 --> 00:01:45,315

No way. Not in a million years. No.

25

00:01:45,860 --> 00:01:49,142

But in this area marijuana is far from fringe

26

00:01:49,646 --> 00:01:51,712

More joints?

And do you want island sweet?

27

00:01:52,016 --> 00:01:54,723

- Medical dispensaries are everywhere

- Welcome, guys

28

00:01:55,082 --> 00:01:58,947

People are smoking in private clubs

and public festivals

29

00:01:59,589 --> 00:02:02,345

But none of this is for Matt

He is a military man

30

00:02:02,983 --> 00:02:05,135

and marijuana would be a career ender

31

00:02:05,432 --> 00:02:08,866

I grew up in Wisconsin

in a well-loving family, and I was educated, like,

32

00:02:09,144 --> 00:02:12,164

that's a drug. You don't do that!

And I never did

33

00:02:12,596 --> 00:02:15,697

But just decades ago marijuana was a legitimate medication

34

00:02:16,184 --> 00:02:20,578

also called cannabis. prescribed by doctors

and dispensed by pharmacies

35

00:02:21,138 --> 00:02:25,406

But that all changed in 1930

36

00:02:27,408 --> 00:02:31,359

Henry Anslinger, the United States first drug czar

37

00:02:31,645 --> 00:02:33,911

For him public enemy number one

38

00:02:34,260 --> 00:02:36,914

you guessed it, marijuana.

39

00:02:37,449 --> 00:02:42,324

This guy saw how he could increase the budget

of his department

40

00:02:42,622 --> 00:02:45,999

by having this mission.

Going after marijuana.

41

00:02:46,553 --> 00:02:50,098

You know, saying that there's this drug

that the Mexican migrant workers are smoking

42

00:02:50,367 --> 00:02:53,930

and it's loco weed, and it's going make them crazy,

and they're going to rape your women.

43

00:02:54,336 --> 00:02:57,789

He got the anti-marijuana message out

through news reports

44

00:02:58,273 --> 00:03:01,000

and then came this

45

00:03:03,735 --> 00:03:05,977

The film "Reefer Madness"

46

00:03:06,381 --> 00:03:10,245

portraying the users of marijuana

as unproductive, crazed.

47

00:03:10,567 --> 00:03:13,569

People are still afraid of what pot can do to them.

48

00:03:13,915 --> 00:03:18,106

- In many ways to have defined our attitudes now for 70 years!

-Yes

49

00:03:18,639 --> 00:03:21,908

Marijuana then became illegal in 1937

50

00:03:22,219 --> 00:03:26,658

And by 1970 it was a schedule

one controlled substance

51

00:03:27,096 --> 00:03:28,283

The government was saying

52

00:03:28,598 --> 00:03:32,075

It had no medicinal value

and had a high potential for abuse

53

00:03:33,368 --> 00:03:36,091

All reasons why the Figis stayed away from marijuana

54

00:03:36,910 --> 00:03:39,092

Until this

55

00:03:39,485 --> 00:03:42,300

And this might be hard for some of you to watch

56

00:03:44,516 --> 00:03:46,316

- It's OK, baby

57

00:03:52,292 --> 00:03:55,796

This is their daughter, Charlotte

58

00:03:56,388 --> 00:03:57,404

having a seizure.

59

00:03:58,452 --> 00:04:01,144

We just thought it was just one random fibril seizure

60

00:04:01,708 --> 00:04:05,271

- Nothing to really do. No medications.

It's a fluke? Right

61

00:04:05,618 --> 00:04:09,777

A fluke made sense.

After all, Charlotte, nicknamed Charlie

62

00:04:10,009 --> 00:04:13,750

was born perfectly healthy.

A fraternal twin to sister Chase

63

00:04:15,719 --> 00:04:19,343

Charlie always had big, big smiles.

Just happy kids

64

00:04:19,816 --> 00:04:21,802

- Easy

- Yes, easy. Very much so

65

00:04:22,844 --> 00:04:23,930

So it was around three months

66

00:04:24,240 --> 00:04:27,552

you said that when you first noticed

that Charlie had a seizure.

67

00:04:27,832 --> 00:04:30,311

I was changing her diaper.

While putting a new diaper on from after the bath

68

00:04:30,794 --> 00:04:32,979

and her eyes just started flickering.

69

00:04:33,310 --> 00:04:35,611

It led to the first of many trips to the E.R.

70

00:04:36,332 --> 00:04:40,987

They did the million-dollar workup, MRI, EEG,

spinal tap, you know, they did the whole workup

71

00:04:41,461 --> 00:04:43,411

and found nothing and sent us home.

72

00:04:43,964 --> 00:04:46,479

No abnormal blood test?

No abnormal scan?

73

00:04:46,802 --> 00:04:49,758

and developing normally, too.

You know, talking and walking

74

00:04:50,104 --> 00:04:52,994

and the same day as her twin.

Nothing was behind yet.

75

00:04:54,844 --> 00:04:58,219

By the time she was 2, though

the seizures had become constant

76

00:04:58,576 --> 00:05:01,610

and started to take their toll

on their once happy

77

00:05:02,179 --> 00:05:05,926

- Joyful little girl

- She started to really decline cognitively

78

00:05:06,237 --> 00:05:09,242

and she was slipping away.

And she just wasn't keeping up with her twin.

79

00:05:09,616 --> 00:05:11,277

The Figis finally found an answer

80

00:05:12,025 --> 00:05:15,158

It was awful news.

Dravet Syndrome.

81

00:05:15,841 --> 00:05:17,875

It is severe intractable epilepsy

82

00:05:18,297 --> 00:05:21,939

The seizures start during the first year of life

and are unstoppable

83

00:05:22,552 --> 00:05:24,924

Difficult to control and very damaging

84

00:05:25,553 --> 00:05:29,818

Severe behavioral problems, attention deficit,

hyperactivity the self-injury

85

00:05:30,135 --> 00:05:31,839

you know, banging her head on the floor

86

00:05:32,106 --> 00:05:34,916

and pulling her hair out

and like a possessed child

87

00:05:35,467 --> 00:05:37,648

This isn't your perfect, happy Charlotte.

88

00:05:38,111 --> 00:05:42,697

It was a race against time. Many Dravet kids

die young in early childhood

89

00:05:43,284 --> 00:05:48,380

Charlotte was almost 3. For the next

two years the Figis tried everything

90

00:05:48,805 --> 00:05:51,163

Strange diets, acupuncture

91

00:05:52,355 --> 00:05:55,952

and dozens of powerful drugs like valium,

Ativan, even barbital

92

00:05:56,376 --> 00:05:59,246

But nothing seemed to help.

Even worse

93

00:05:59,550 --> 00:06:02,493

some of the medications nearly killed her.

94

00:06:02,864 --> 00:06:07,011

After one dose she stops breathing and

after two doses her heart will stop.

95

00:06:07,316 --> 00:06:09,692

- Did you have to do CPR then on her yourself?

- Yes

96

00:06:10,069 --> 00:06:12,155

I remember when her heart stopped,

and I had her pulse

97

00:06:12,491 --> 00:06:15,688

and I lost her pulse. There was just nothing.

The ambulance is on its way.

98

00:06:16,778 --> 00:06:18,028

She survived.

99

00:06:19,645 --> 00:06:22,126

- Mommy?

- You're OK. Mommy is here.

100

00:06:22,406 --> 00:06:26,303

But now it was fall of 2011

and Charlotte was 5 years old

101

00:06:26,773 --> 00:06:28,056

When things are at their worst she just

102

00:06:28,332 --> 00:06:33,214

the kids are sleeping either in my room or next.

So they can hear her seizure scream all night

103

00:06:33,527 --> 00:06:36,530

50 times a night, and Chase would

come in, in the morning

104

00:06:36,812 --> 00:06:41,878

and just misses her twin and just hug her and

like, rub her head and say

105

00:06:42,611 --> 00:06:46,205

I'm just so glad you survived through

the night last night.

106

00:06:47,648 --> 00:06:49,974

Matt had been deployed to Afghanistan

107

00:06:50,381 --> 00:06:54,008

and the only thing he could do to help

was start scouring the Internet.

108

00:06:55,446 --> 00:06:59,142

And he stumbled on to this video

of a child using marijuana

109

00:06:59,934 --> 00:07:03,795

- So how is everything going?

- He had four days without a seizure

110

00:07:04,154 --> 00:07:08,768

Wow! They're having success on specifically

Dravet. This is interesting. It's natural.

111

00:07:09,316 --> 00:07:12,554

And while he couldn't ever imagine

taking marijuana himself

112

00:07:12,912 --> 00:07:16,950

he was now in the stunning position

of recommending it for Charlotte.

113

00:07:17,465 --> 00:07:19,950

- I was, like, we need to do this.

- And I said I don't know.

114

00:07:20,758 --> 00:07:23,136

- There you are

115

00:07:23,577 --> 00:07:26,270

And then Charlotte's condition got worse

116

00:07:27,340 --> 00:07:30,351

Three hundred seizures a week.

Almost two every hour

117

00:07:30,893 --> 00:07:34,273

She was not talking or moving,

Basically catatonic

118

00:07:35,558 --> 00:07:38,520

As a last resort doctors wanted to either prescribe

119

00:07:38,871 --> 00:07:41,041

a powerful veterinary drugs

used on epileptic dogs

120

00:07:41,732 --> 00:07:46,154

or put Charlotte in a medically induced coma.

So her brain and body could rest

121

00:07:46,732 --> 00:07:49,892

For Paige those were not good options

122

00:07:50,329 --> 00:07:54,300

but maybe, just maybe marijuana now was

123

00:07:55,568 --> 00:07:58,365

But she was about to find out

how hard that would be.

124

00:07:58,740 --> 00:08:01,277

This isn't go to the pharmacy

and pick up your medicine

125

00:08:01,539 --> 00:08:02,836

There was no protocol.

126

00:08:03,354 --> 00:08:05,493

When we come back, what will the Figis do?

127

00:08:05,811 --> 00:08:09,123

And What would you do if this were your daughter?

128

00:08:24,989 --> 00:08:28,285

I had resigned myself. I don't think

she's going to survive this.

129

00:08:28,879 --> 00:08:31,445

We've seen her flatlined in a hospital.

We've said good- bye.

130

00:08:34,241 --> 00:08:38,104

You're listening to Matt and Paige Figi

describe their own daughter.

131

00:08:39,151 --> 00:08:41,477

What would you do if this were your child?

132

00:08:42,169 --> 00:08:44,408

Charlotte Figi had an extreme form of epilepsy.

133

00:08:45,175 --> 00:08:48,140

Her body was so frail that any seizure could kill her.

134

00:08:48,779 --> 00:08:51,740

With no traditional treatment left to try

and the clock ticking away,

135

00:08:52,049 --> 00:08:54,667

her parents decided to try marijuana.

136

00:08:55,592 --> 00:08:58,197

Charlotte was just 5 years old.

137

00:08:58,798 --> 00:09:01,827

You need a card in order to be able

to get the cannabis from a pharmacy.

138

00:09:02,362 --> 00:09:03,662

Doctors have to prescribe it.

139

00:09:03,662 --> 00:09:07,234

You need two doctors in Colorado

to get the card for a juvenile or a child.

140

00:09:08,506 --> 00:09:13,806

It was hard. We were the first young child

and they said no. Everyone said no, no, no, no.

141

00:09:14,278 --> 00:09:18,403

Certainly her age played a role in my hesitance.

142

00:09:19,339 --> 00:09:21,719

Dr. Alan Shackelford is a Harvard-trained physician.

143

00:09:22,107 --> 00:09:25,894

He is also among a handful of doctors in Colorado

who give prescriptions for medical marijuana.

144

00:09:26,970 --> 00:09:30,727

From the moment Charlotte entered his office,

he knew she was in trouble.

145

00:09:31,439 --> 00:09:34,255

While he was just examining her, she had two seizures.

146

00:09:34,873 --> 00:09:38,730

She'd failed everything.

There were no more options for her.

147

00:09:39,247 --> 00:09:41,765

Everything had been tried, except cannabis.

148

00:09:43,264 --> 00:09:45,285

Here's how scientists think it might work.

149

00:09:45,688 --> 00:09:47,693

Marijuana is made up of two ingredients

150

00:09:48,165 --> 00:09:51,385

THC, that's the psychoactive part that makes

you high,

151

00:09:51,929 --> 00:09:54,684

and CBD, also can cannabidiol

152

00:09:55,601 --> 00:09:59,272

If the CBD that scientists think modulates

electrical and chemical activity

153

00:09:59,838 --> 00:10:03,854

to help quiet the excessive activity

in the brain that causes seizures.

154

00:10:05,739 --> 00:10:09,724

Dr. Julie Holland is the editor of the "Pot Book:

A Complete Guide to Cannabis."

155

00:10:10,319 --> 00:10:13,866

For a long time the work on cannabis

and epilepsy was sort of inconclusive.

156

00:10:14,217 --> 00:10:16,245

Maybe it works. Maybe it doesn't.

They couldn't quite figure it out.

157

00:10:16,485 --> 00:10:19,481

It's only when they really started

separating THC from CBD...

158

00:10:19,859 --> 00:10:24,149

that they saw, you know, definitively, yes,

CBD seems to really stop seizures.

159

00:10:25,454 --> 00:10:28,305

So the Figis needed to find

something that was rare.

160

00:10:29,176 --> 00:10:31,984

A strain of marijuana that was low in THC..

161

00:10:32,446 --> 00:10:34,561

of course, they didn't want

Charlotte getting stoned!

162

00:10:35,291 --> 00:10:38,060

Bbut also high in CBD to treat her seizures.

163

00:10:39,270 --> 00:10:40,610

And that wouldn't be easy.

164

00:10:41,145 --> 00:10:46,053

Dispensaries and growers, they make

their money off strains that are high in THC.

165

00:10:46,458 --> 00:10:48,120

- I'm Joel.

- I'm Josh.

166

00:10:49,011 --> 00:10:51,418

No one knows that better than the Stanley brothers.

167

00:10:51,916 --> 00:10:53,852

Their family business is pot.

168

00:10:54,511 --> 00:10:58,734

And if you look at these clean cut guys

and what you see surprises you, don't worry.

169

00:10:59,090 --> 00:11:00,799

They've heard it all before.

170

00:11:01,194 --> 00:11:03,757

When we were round the corner,

they're like, oh, wait a second.

171

00:11:03,757 --> 00:11:05,967

Did You finish High school?

172

00:11:07,441 --> 00:11:11,562

They all not only finished high school,

but also college and in some cases graduate

173

00:11:12,328 --> 00:11:16,602

Now they are some of Colorado's

biggest growers and dispensary owners.

174

00:11:17,455 --> 00:11:20,488

They produce up to 600 pounds

of medical marijuana a year,

175

00:11:21,330 --> 00:11:24,035

and much of that marijuana is high in THC.

176

00:11:25,949 --> 00:11:29,869

But here on their remote farm at

this undisclosed location in the mountains

177

00:11:30,135 --> 00:11:33,133

It takes a lot of plants. We're allowed

to grow six per patient.

178

00:11:33,380 --> 00:11:35,227

They have been growing something different.

179

00:11:35,624 --> 00:11:37,571

Something they call revolutionary

180

00:11:38,099 --> 00:11:39,095

It's a greenhouse one?

181

00:11:39,339 --> 00:11:43,406

- Greenhouse one? Yes!

- Welcome to it. Looking the paradise

182

00:11:43,720 --> 00:11:46,066

Behind closed doors and under

tight security...

183

00:11:46,448 --> 00:11:49,558

we enter what the Stanleys

call the garden of Eden.

184

00:11:52,727 --> 00:11:53,955

There's nothing like this in the world.

185

00:11:54,498 --> 00:11:58,224

This place 21 percent CBD and

less than 1 percent THC.

186

00:11:58,659 --> 00:12:02,353

It took years of crossbreeding plants

to get to this point.

187

00:12:03,370 --> 00:12:06,876

Instead of breeding up the THC

we've bred down the THC...

188

00:12:07,664 --> 00:12:10,868

and bred up the CBD, and people said,

you are crazy!

189

00:12:11,308 --> 00:12:14,041

- You know, who is going to smoke that?

- So why grow it then?

190

00:12:14,590 --> 00:12:18,881

Well, the Stanleys also believed in CBD's

potential to treat many diseases.

191

00:12:20,800 --> 00:12:23,700

And they had seen it change lives before.

192

00:12:24,315 --> 00:12:26,891

I always have two strains.

193

00:12:27,281 --> 00:12:29,209

Meet 19-year-old Chaz Moore.

194

00:12:29,209 --> 00:12:31,349

He uses many different strains of marijuana.

195

00:12:32,122 --> 00:12:35,959

Many of them high in CBD to treat

his rare disorder of the diaphragm.

196

00:12:36,757 --> 00:12:40,044

- My abs will like lock up

- That's why he's talking this way.

197

00:12:40,452 --> 00:12:43,699

Almost speaking in hiccups, like he

can't catch his breath.

198

00:12:44,528 --> 00:12:47,337

It's called myoclonus diaphragmatic flutter.

199

00:12:47,598 --> 00:12:51,178

This fluttering here is annoying

but it becomes painful. Yes.

200

00:12:51,382 --> 00:12:55,656

- Pretty quickly, I imagine.

- Yes, after like 15, 20 minutes

201

00:12:56,287 --> 00:12:58,859

this is where I can like start to really feel

202

00:12:59,277 --> 00:13:01,706

He's about to show me how the marijuana works.

203

00:13:02,170 --> 00:13:04,502

He's been convulsing now for seven minutes.

204

00:13:05,003 --> 00:13:06,320

How quickly do you expect this to work?

205

00:13:06,536 --> 00:13:09,276

Within like the first five minutes.

206

00:13:18,446 --> 00:13:20,976

- And I'm done, like.

- That's it?

207

00:13:20,976 --> 00:13:21,934

That's it.

208

00:13:22,343 --> 00:13:24,258

It was actually less than a minute.

209

00:13:24,823 --> 00:13:26,973

Depending on the attack and the day,

210

00:13:27,266 --> 00:13:29,541

like, it will work within the first couple of hits.

211

00:13:29,862 --> 00:13:31,787

Hear how his voice is completely different.

212

00:13:32,265 --> 00:13:33,992

That attack lasted eight minutes,

213

00:13:35,209 --> 00:13:36,998

but some have lasted the much longer...

214

00:13:37,475 --> 00:13:39,494

and happened as often as 40 times a day,

215

00:13:40,024 --> 00:13:43,368

and like Charlotte, he had tried so many things before.

216

00:13:44,122 --> 00:13:49,092

By 16 Chaz was taking these powerful, addictive, potentially deadly narcotics...

217

00:13:49,658 --> 00:13:52,898

and muscle relaxants daily,

like valium and morphine.

218

00:13:53,396 --> 00:13:57,136

It would be safe to say that marijuana,

in which you have in your hand there,

219

00:13:57,368 --> 00:13:59,888

is better than all those pills

for you in terms of treating? Yes.

220

00:14:00,233 --> 00:14:01,668

What's going on.

221

00:14:01,916 --> 00:14:03,667

Yes. I wouldn't -- I'm not zombie-fied.

222

00:14:04,046 --> 00:14:08,037

I've had 16, 17 attacks today,

and I'm still sitting up talking to you.

223

00:14:08,318 --> 00:14:10,634

My first attack on all these, I'd be in the hospital.

224

00:14:11,972 --> 00:14:15,148

I'm a firm believer that marijuana has

actually saved my son's life.

225

00:14:15,595 --> 00:14:17,430

Chaz's father, Sean.

226

00:14:17,930 --> 00:14:22,160

His quality of life now is 1,000 times better...

227

00:14:22,546 --> 00:14:24,312

than what it was when he was on

the pharmaceuticals.

228

00:14:24,982 --> 00:14:28,707

A quality of life that Paige Figi desperately

wanted for her daughter, Charlotte,

229

00:14:29,420 --> 00:14:31,242

but she still had one hurdle to cross.

230

00:14:31,882 --> 00:14:33,903

Convincing dispensary owners, like the Stanleys,

231

00:14:34,210 --> 00:14:37,137

to sell marijuana to a 5-year-old little girl.

232

00:14:37,998 --> 00:14:40,889

When Charlotte's mother called my brother, Joel,

233

00:14:41,297 --> 00:14:43,593

the brothers had a meeting and said

tell us about this patient.

234

00:14:44,112 --> 00:14:48,081

She's 5 years old, he said, and we said,

no, we can't do that.

235

00:14:49,574 --> 00:14:50,175

Why?

236

00:14:50,668 --> 00:14:52,539

It was the fear of the unknown.

237

00:14:53,043 --> 00:14:56,424

Charlotte was the youngest patient

at the time wanting marijuana.

238

00:14:56,920 --> 00:14:58,716

Would it be too much for her?

239

00:14:59,576 --> 00:15:01,095

Or would it change her life forever?

240

00:15:01,595 --> 00:15:02,957

We'll find that out later,

241

00:15:03,242 --> 00:15:06,952

but, first, learn more about what

marijuana does to your kids' brain

242

00:15:07,586 --> 00:15:08,647

and yours as well.

DR. JULIE HOLLAND, EDITOR, THE POT BOOK: You know, saying that there's this drug that the Mexican migrant workers are smoking, and it's loco weed, and it's going make them crazy, and they're going to rape your women.

came this. The film "Reefer Madness" portraying the users of
marijuana as unproductive, crazed.

enlouquecidos.

nossas atuais atitudes por 70 anos.

HOLLAND: Yes.

HOLLAND: Sim.

GUPTA: Marijuana then became illegal in 1937. And by 1970 it was a schedule one
controlled substance. The government was saying it had no medicinal value and
had a high potential for abuse. All reasons why the Figis stayed away from
marijuana. Until this. And this might be hard for some of you to watch.

GUPTA: A maconha então se tornou ilegal
em 1937.

P. FIGI: It's OK, baby.

P. FIGI: Está tudo bem, meu bebê.

GUPTA: This is their daughter, Charlotte, having a seizure.

GUPTA: Esta é sua filha, Charlotte,
tendo uma convulsão.

P. FIGI: We just thought it was just one random febrile seizure.

P. FIGI: Pensamos que fosse apenas
uma convulsão febril aleatória.

GUPTA: Nothing to really do. No medications. It's a fluke?

GUPTA: Nada a se fazer. Nenhum medicamento.
Uma casualidade?

P. FIGI: Right.

P. FIGI: Certo.

GUPTA: A fluke made sense. After all, Charlotte, nicknamed Charlie, was born
perfectly healthy. A fraternal twin to sister Chase.

GUPTA: Uma casualidade fez sentido.
Afinal, Charlotte, apelidada Charlie, nasceu perfeitamente saudável. Gêmea
fraterna da irmã Chase.

M. FIGI: Charlie always had big, big smiles. Just happy kids.

M. FIGI: Charlie sempre teve um
grande sorriso. Uma crianças feliz.

P. FIGI: Easy.

P. FIGI: Tranquila.

M. FIGI: Yes, easy. Very much so.

M. FIGI: Sim, tranquila. Muito.

GUPTA: So it was around three months you said that when you first noticed --

P. FIGI: Yes. Yes.

P. FIGI: Sim. Sim.

GUPTA: -- that Charlie had a seizure.

GUPTA: -- que Charlie teve uma convulsão.

M. FIGI: I was changing her diaper. While putting a new diaper on from after
the bath, and her eyes just started flickering.

M. FIGI: Estava trocando sua

tremer.

GUPTA: It led to the first of many trips to the E.R.

GUPTA: E isso levou à primeira de
muitas corridas ao pronto socorro.

P. FIGI: They did the million-dollar workup, MRI, EEG, spinal tap, you know,
they did the whole workup and found nothing and sent us home.

GUPTA: No abnormal blood test? No abnormal scan?

GUPTA: Nenhum resultado anormal de
teste de sangue? Nenhuma resonância anormal?

P. FIGI: And developing normally, too. You know, talking and walking and the
same day as her twin. Nothing was behind yet.

P. FIGI: E também estava se
desenvolvendo normalmente.
Nada estava atrasado, ainda.

GUPTA: By the time she was 2, though, the seizures had become constant and
started to take their toll on their once happy, joyful little girl.

GUPTA: Aos 2 anos, todavia, as
menininha, antes feliz e alegre.

P. FIGI: She started to really decline cognitively, and she was slipping away.
And she just wasn't keeping up with her twin.

P. FIGI: Suas funções cognitivas
começaram realmente a regredir, estava padecendo. Ela não conseguia mais
acompanhar sua gêmea.

GUPTA: The Figis finally found an answer. It was awful news. Dravet Syndrome.
It is severe intractable epilepsy. The seizures start during the first year of
life and are unstoppable. Difficult to control and very damaging.

GUPTA: Os Figis finalmente encontraram

P. FIGI: Severe behavioral problems, attention deficit, hyperactivity, the
self-injury, you know, banging her head on the floor, and pulling her hair out,
and like a possessed child. This isn't your perfect, happy Charlotte.

P. FIGI: Problemas comportamentais
Charlotte, perfeita, feliz.

GUPTA: It was a race against time. Many Dravet kids die young, in early
childhood. Charlotte was almost 3. For the next two years the Figis tried
everything. Strange diets, acupuncture, and dozens of powerful drugs like
valium, Ativan, even barbital. But nothing seemed to help. Even worse, some of
the medications nearly killed her.

GUPTA: É uma corrida contra o
tempo.
fenobarbital. Mas nada parecia ajudar. Pior, alguns dos medicamentos quase a
mataram.

P. FIGI: After one dose she stops breathing, and after two doses her heart will
stop.

GUPTA: Did you have to do CPR then on her yourself?

GUPTA: E você mesma teve que fazer
a massagem cardiorrespiratória?

P. FIGI: Yes. I remember when her heart stopped, and I had her pulse, and I
lost her pulse. There was just nothing. The ambulance is on its way.

P. FIGI: Sim. Lembro quando seu
coração parou e tinha tirado seu pulso e perdi seu pulso. Não havia nada. A ambulância
estava a caminho.

GUPTA: She survived.

GUPTA: Ela sobreviveu.

P. FIGI: You're OK. Mommy is here.

P. FIGI: Está tudo bem, filhinha. Mamãe
está aqui.

GUPTA: But now it was fall of 2011, and Charlotte was 5 years old.

GUPTA: Mas então era outono de
2011, e Charlotte tinha 5 anos.

P. FIGI: When things are at their worst, she just -- the kids are sleeping
either in my room or next so they can hear her seizure scream all night, 50
times a night, and Chase would come in, in the morning and just misses her twin
and just hug her and, like, rub her head and say, I'm just so glad you survived
through the night last night.

P. FIGI: Na pior fase, ela apenas
passou.

GUPTA: Matt had been deployed to Afghanistan, and the only thing he could do to
help was start scouring the Internet, and he stumbled on to this video of a
child using marijuana.

usando maconha.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So how is everything going?

HOMEM NÃO IDENTIFICADO: E então,
como vão as coisas?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He had four days without a seizure.

HOMEM NÃO IDENTIFICADO: Faz quatro
dias que ele não tem uma convulsão.

M. FIGI: I'm, like, wow, they're having success on specifically Dravet. This is
interesting. It's natural.

natural.

GUPTA: And while he couldn't ever imagine taking marijuana himself, he was now
in the stunning position of recommending it for Charlotte.

M. FIGI: I was, like, we need to do this.

M. FIGI: Eu dizia, precisamos
fazer isso.

P. FIGI: And I said I don't know. There you are.

P. FIGI: E eu disse, não sei não. Foi
isso.

GUPTA: And then Charlotte's condition got worse. Three hundred seizures a week.
Almost two every hour. She was not talking or moving. Basically catatonic. As a
last resort, doctors wanted to either prescribe a powerful veterinary drug used
on epileptic dogs or put Charlotte in a medically induced coma so her brain and
body could rest.

GUPTA: E então a condição de
Charlotte piorou. Trezentas convulsões por semana. Quase duas por hora. Ela parou
pudessem descansar.

For Paige those were not good options, but maybe, just maybe marijuana now was.
But she was about to find out how hard that would be.

Para Paige estas não eram boas opções,
mas talvez, talvez agora a maconha fosse. Mas ela estava prestes a descobrir o
quão difícil isso seria.

P. FIGI: This isn't go to the pharmacy and pick up your medicine. There was no
protocol.

P. FIGI: Não é o caso de ir à farmácia
e pegar o remédio. Não havia protocolo.

GUPTA: When we come back, what will the Figis do? And What would you do if this
were your daughter?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(COMERCIAL)

P. FIGI: I had resigned myself. I don't think she's going to survive this.

P. FIGI: Havia me resignado. Não
acreditava que ela fosse sobreviver a isso.

M. FIGI: We've seen her flatlined in a hospital. We've said good- bye.

M. FIGI: Vimos ela tendo uma
parada cardíaca no hospital. Dissemos adeus.

GUPTA: You're listening to Matt and Paige Figi describe their own daughter.

GUPTA: Vocês estão ouvindo a Matt e
Paige Figi descrever sua própria filha.

What would you do if this were your child?

O que vocês fariam se ela fosse
sua filha?

Charlotte Figi had an extreme form of epilepsy. Her body was so frail that any
seizure could kill her. With no traditional treatment left to try and the clock
ticking away, her parents decided to try marijuana. Charlotte was just 5 years
old.

pais decidiram tentar a maconha. Charlotte tinha apenas 5 anos.

You need a card in order to be able to get the cannabis from a pharmacy.
Doctors have to prescribe it.

Você precisa uma carteirinha para
conseguir obter canábis de uma farmácia. Os médicos precisam prescrever.

P. FIGI: You need two doctors in Colorado to get the card for a juvenile or a
child. It was hard. We were the first young child and they said no. Everyone
said no, no, no, no.

Todos
disseram não, não, não, não.

DR. ALAN SHACKELFORD, PRESCRIBES MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Certainly her age played a
role in my hesitance.

DR. ALAN SHACKELFORD, PRESCREVE MACONHA

GUPTA: Dr. Alan Shackelford is a Harvard-trained physician. He is also among a
handful of doctors in Colorado who give prescriptions for medical marijuana.
From the moment Charlotte entered his office, he knew she was in trouble. While
he was just examining her, she had two seizures.

Enquanto ele estava a examinando,
ela teve duas convulsões.

SHACKELFORD: She'd failed everything. There were no more options for her.
Everything had been tried, except cannabis.

SHACKELFORD: Ela falhou com tudo. Não
havia mais opções para ela. Havíamos tentado tudo, menos a canábis.

GUPTA: Here's how scientists think it might work. Marijuana is made up of two
ingredients -- THC, that's the psychoactive part that makes you high, and CBD,
also can cannibadiol. If the CBD that scientists think modulates electrical and
chemical activity to help quiet the excessive activity in the brain that causes
seizures.

Pesquisando uns termos, encontrei:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/S%C3%ADndrome-de-Dravet-Mal%C3%BA/195076537226638

Wow man!!!

Excelente reportagem.

TRADUCAO 15:00-20:00, DESCULPE A DEMORA ... MUITO TRAMPO ...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you're smoking weed, make some noise.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

Sim.

GUPTA: April 20th, Denver, Colorado. Tens of thousands from around
the country and the world lighting up legally.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Good cannabis crop, you all.

Feliz Canabis Cup para todos. (entendo cannabis cup e não cannabis crop)

GUPTA: For some it's a lifestyle. For others it's a lifeline.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Working with the Lupus Foundation and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Eu trabalho com a Fundação Lupus e artrites reumática.

GUPTA: But for all of them, I wonder, what was it doing to their brains?

DR. STACI GRUBER, DIRECTOR, MCLEAN HOSPITAL'S BRAIN IMAGING CENTER: Some of my patients call me pot doc.

Dr. Staci Gruber, diretora do centro de imagem do cérebro do hospital McLean.

GUPTA: Your patients call you pot doc?

GRUBER: Well, they never meet anybody who's as interested in hearing about their marijuana use as I am.

GUPTA: Dr. Staci Gruber is serious about pot.

GRUBER: I want you to name the color and not to read it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK.

OK.

GUPTA: I met her in her labs at McLean Hospital near Boston. She's using high-tech imaging to see what happens in the brain when you smoke.

GRUBER: When you first smoke, that is, you know, you light up a joint, a spiff, a blunt, receptors, which are throughout the brain, respond and these areas of the brain are responsible for things like pleasure, memory, learning, sensation, sense of time and space, coordination, movement, appetite, and other drives, shall we say, so it's sort of an all over impact, right?

GUPTA: So reward, pleasure, hunger. You have this overall feeling of well being they say. That all sounds pretty good.

(LAUGHTER)

(RISADAS)

GRUBER: It does sound pretty good.

Isso mesmo, tudo parece muito bom.

GUPTA: And it's not just feeling good, but there's this phenomenon reported by many smokers over the years, especially famous artists, the ability to be more creative.

GRUBER: When you feel that high, there's sort of a release of dopamine, and your brain sort of -- has the ability to perceive things slightly differently from the way you might have if you hadn't been smoking pot. What you really see is this reduction in inhibitory function.

AMIR PAINTER: Welcome, Dr.Gupta.

Bem vindo Dr. Sanjay.

GUPTA: Pretty spectacular.

Espetacular.

GUPTA: Less inhibition. That's something that painter Amir says helps him be more creative. A successful artist. His canvasses
sell for up to $25,000.

AMIR: It's my favorite way to work.

É o melhor jeito de trabalhar

GUPTA: Using marijuana.

Fumando maconha?

AMIR: Yes.

Sim.

GUPTA: He has been painting for 14 years, smoking for even longer. He says it makes him feel more relaxed, but most importantly for him, he says it makes him less critical of his own work.

AMIR: Stop worrying so much about this and that and just sort of looking
and being as present as possible.

GUPTA: Amir does caution that it's a delicate balancing for him.

AMIR: It would make me very apprehensive, maybe a little paranoid. Just too analytical.

HOLLAND: You can you get paranoid, you can have disorganized thinking. You get disoriented. It can be uncomfortable.

It can lead to panic attacks or anxiety attacks in people.

GUPTA: How do you know when you've done too much?

AMIR: Simple tasks become very frustrating, like mixing paint, and then just sort of get into this state of, you know –

Quando faço tarefas simples, elas me deixam frustrado, por exemplo misturar as tintas. Ai você entra neste estado de ‘DAAHH’

(LAUGHTER)

(RISADAS)

GUPTA: And why that happens is exactly what Columbia University neuroscientist Carl Hart is investigating.

HART: Exhale.

Exala

GUPTA: Research subjects in his lab smoke marijuana and then take a variety of cognitive tests.

HART: The effects will be disruption in memory, disruptions in inhibitory control. They will become slower at cognitive functioning. A wide range of things. These effects are temporary, but they're pretty pronounced and they are clear.

GUPTA: And it's slowly becoming clear to scientists what part of the brain is
most affected. It's the prefrontal cortex.

É a parte pré-frontal, córtex.

HART: It's very important for planning, thinking, coordinating your behaviors. There are tons of marijuana receptors in this region and we think that marijuana, particularly in the novice, can disrupt all of those behaviors.

GUPTA: An impairment that Hart cautions could be dangerous. Especially when driving.

HART: You may prematurely hit your brakes. You may prematurely hit the gas pedal. A wide range of things. You may
make a turn without looking more carefully.

GUPTA: Look at this experiment done by CNN affiliate KIRO in Washington state. Subjects smoke marijuana and then drove. One was a daily medical marijuana smoker and another an infrequent weekend smoker.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Relaxed and buzzed.

Estou relaxado, viajando.

GUPTA: The more the novice user smoked, the more trouble behind the wheel.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Watch yourself. Watch yourself.

Sai da frente, sai da frente.

GUPTA: But interestingly, the habitual smoker didn't have as much trouble.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I would (INAUDIBLE).

1
00:30:16,996 --> 00:30:18,353
De sua esposa Paige

2
00:30:18,353 --> 00:30:20,732

3
00:30:21,626 --> 00:30:24,555

4
00:30:25,098 --> 00:30:27,247
diagnosticada com uma severa forma de eplepsia

5
00:30:27,247 --> 00:30:29,592
ela estava tendo 300 convulsões por semana

6
00:30:29,592 --> 00:30:33,393

7
00:30:34,342 --> 00:30:36,447

8
00:30:36,448 --> 00:30:38,767
nós precisávamos tentar algo diferente

9
00:30:40,001 --> 00:30:44,656

10
00:30:46,709 --> 00:30:51,585

11
00:30:52,083 --> 00:30:55,083

12
00:30:55,341 --> 00:30:57,077
e ao mesmo tempo fraca em THC

13
00:30:57,078 --> 00:31:00,256
lembre-se ela não quer sua filha "chapada"

14
00:31:01,318 --> 00:31:04,155

15
00:31:04,156 --> 00:31:06,794
o proprietario ficou surpreso porque ninguem nunca a quiz

16
00:31:06,829 --> 00:31:08,627

17
00:31:08,986 --> 00:31:12,688
isso é o consenso geral, sabe?

18
00:31:12,723 --> 00:31:14,204

19
00:31:14,239 --> 00:31:17,656

20
00:31:17,773 --> 00:31:21,229

21
00:31:21,293 --> 00:31:26,298
eu eu disse, você pode me ajudar a extrair remedio desse saco de maconha ?

22
00:31:26,333 --> 00:31:30,487

23
00:31:32,153 --> 00:31:34,290
foi emocionante e muito nervosismo

24
00:31:35,694 --> 00:31:38,668
segurando Charlotte em seus braços Paige esperou

25
00:31:38,668 --> 00:31:40,217
uma hora se passou

26
00:31:40,710 --> 00:31:41,710
e então outra

27
00:31:41,710 --> 00:31:43,673
e então outra

28
00:31:45,484 --> 00:31:47,002
ela não teve convulsões aquele dia

29
00:31:47,002 --> 00:31:49,160
e então ela não teve convulsões naquela noite

30
00:31:49,160 --> 00:31:51,643
você sentou lá e ficou olhando para o relógio ?

31
00:31:51,643 --> 00:31:55,149

32
00:31:55,150 --> 00:31:56,583
e no dia seguinte

33
00:31:56,584 --> 00:31:59,538

34
00:31:59,539 --> 00:32:03,996
então, você sabe, eu pensei, isso é loucura

35
00:32:03,997 --> 00:32:06,183
Eu me lembro o quão feliz Paige estava

36
00:32:06,184 --> 00:32:08,285
estava realmente funcionando eu não podia acreditar

37
00:32:08,286 --> 00:32:10,857
é, isso é muito bom de se ouvir

38
00:32:10,858 --> 00:32:12,224
funcionou!

39
00:32:13,724 --> 00:32:17,857

40
00:32:17,858 --> 00:32:19,963
Paige estava ficando sem maconha

41
00:32:19,964 --> 00:32:23,445

42
00:32:23,446 --> 00:32:27,854

43
00:32:27,855 --> 00:32:31,815

44
00:32:31,816 --> 00:32:34,734

45
00:32:34,735 --> 00:32:40,233

46
00:32:40,234 --> 00:32:41,692
Eu disse minha nossa

47
00:32:41,693 --> 00:32:44,158

48
00:32:44,159 --> 00:32:47,586

49
00:32:47,587 --> 00:32:52,142

50
00:32:52,143 --> 00:32:57,250

51
00:32:58,796 --> 00:32:59,945
mas então eles se conheceram

52
00:32:59,946 --> 00:33:02,842

53
00:33:05,869 --> 00:33:08,758

54
00:33:08,793 --> 00:33:11,922
é você começa a querer chorar quando começa a falar daquela garotinha

55
00:33:13,447 --> 00:33:15,355
os Figis acertaram na mosca

56
00:33:15,356 --> 00:33:18,426

57
00:33:18,427 --> 00:33:21,367
e eles so precisavam pagar o que podiam bancar

58
00:33:21,368 --> 00:33:24,425

59
00:33:24,426 --> 00:33:28,927

60
00:33:28,928 --> 00:33:31,881
e os menos afortunados

61
00:33:31,882 --> 00:33:34,209
Charlotte foi a primeira dessas crianças

62
00:33:34,210 --> 00:33:37,163
final da primavera de 2012

63
00:33:37,164 --> 00:33:40,233
ela tentou a maconha especial dos stanley's

64
00:33:40,234 --> 00:33:42,817
e de novo funcionou

65
00:33:42,818 --> 00:33:46,179

66
00:33:46,180 --> 00:33:47,838
te pega um pouco de jeito, não ?

67
00:33:47,839 --> 00:33:51,076

68
00:33:51,077 --> 00:33:53,466
ela vivia num estado catatônico

69
00:33:53,467 --> 00:33:56,814

70
00:33:56,815 --> 00:33:58,503
que revelação

71
00:33:58,404 --> 00:33:59,416
chave

72
00:33:59,417 --> 00:34:00,796
sim. chave

73
00:34:00,797 --> 00:34:03,876
a criança que tinha 300 convulsões por semana

74
00:34:03,877 --> 00:34:07,944

75
00:34:11,639 --> 00:34:16,539

76
00:34:16,540 --> 00:34:20,394

77
00:34:24,008 --> 00:34:26,606

78
00:34:26,607 --> 00:34:28,258
agora ela come por si própria

79
00:34:31,314 --> 00:34:33,978
ela estava falando, até andando

80
00:34:39,230 --> 00:34:41,996

81
00:34:41,997 --> 00:34:46,436

82
00:34:46,437 --> 00:34:52,206

83
00:34:52,207 --> 00:34:56,080

84
00:34:56,081 --> 00:34:58,963

85
00:34:58,964 --> 00:35:02,513
é uma incrível virada nas coisas

86
00:35:02,514 --> 00:35:06,128

87
00:35:06,129 --> 00:35:07,739
e você Matt, ainda se pergunta também ?

88
00:35:07,740 --> 00:35:09,532
não mesmo
